Opsomming Die geskiedenis van manlikheid is 'n relatief nuwe genre waarin Suid-Afrikaanse academic; begin beweeg. Geslagsidentiteit en identiteitsvorming het vanaf die 1980s w6reldwyd meer aandag begin geniet. ldentiteite word as belangrike faktore gesien in die vorming en instandhouding van gemeenskappe en kan die verloop van die geskiedenis net so veel as klas, ras, ouderdom, ens., bemvloed. Die doe1 is om 'n werkbare voorstel virdie skryf van 'n geskiedenis van manlikheid uiteen te sit. Om die doelstelling te bereik word daar korNiks gekyk na wat manlikheid, identiteit, vrouestudies, mansstudies en geslagsstudies behels. Die geskiedenis van manlikheid handel oor identiteite en persepsies van wat dit is om 'n man te wees en wat die rol van so 'n identiteit in die samelewing is. Tradisionele geskiedenisse wat meestal deur mans geskryf is fasook die wat deur vrouens vir vrouegeskiedenis geskryf is) dui op neutrale geslagsidentiteite. Die doe1 van manlikheidsgeskiedenis is dus om die geslagsidentiteit uit te lig.
